“Mr. Minded” by Brandon Minded

“Mr. Minded” by Brandon Minded

Artist Statement

Brandon Minded, who works under the artist moniker MrMinded, is known for delivering both vibrant and abstract expressionist paintings that go on to become the backdrop for many of his various cartoony and kitschy character designs. Drawing influence from the likes of Jim Henson and Salvador Dali, he looks to find ways to conceptualize the various elements found in Nature, and in turn bring them to life by invoking the spirit he sees within them. These elements then go on to become a part of the mediums being worked into the piece he’s creating. These mediums range from acrylic paint, clay, fallen twigs, antler sheds and other naturally sourced materials with maintaining respect to the environment in which they are found. Brandon was born in South Dakota just a 4 hour drive from downtown Minneapolis and moved up to the Twin Cities to pursue schooling in Visual Art and Sound Design for Visual Media. He currently works out of his home studio in Circle Pines, MN.

“Unknowable Landscapes” by Stephanie Trinkner

“Unknowable Landscapes” by Stephanie Trinkner

Artist Statement

The meaning we find in things created purely by chance or improvisation shows us that there are connections between seemingly unrelated objects, concepts, or thoughts. In my collage and painting I investigate the way we make these connections and how they can be meaningful. My painting practice is driven by process and intuition, rather than a specific idea that leads me from the start. In this series I used collages to inform each piece, but rather than reproducing each one I use them as a reference to explore where the textures, colors, and images can take me. The abstract forms I make with a certain brushstroke begin to look like the tops of buildings and architectural forms. The pattern and color within one part of a painting seems to be similar to the rugs in the bathroom of my parent’s house. A bright pink and orange section reminds me of flowing water, but the colors turn it into a sunset as they travel down the canvas. I’m most drawn to bright colors, organic shapes, and art that references nature. Although I may begin with an idea that incorporates these elements, I prioritize the instincts I have in the moment that most hold my curiosity. I am influenced by the idea of “both/and” that defines postmodern art and thought. In this way my art can be both strange and familiar; or take on a new meaning for viewers that I never considered as the artist.

“I broke my neck (8-08-2007) leaving me paralyzed from upper chest down. Spinal cord was completely severed from a crushed C-6 vertebra, which left me with limited movement in arms but no finger function. I have almost no sensation in arms due to the nerve damage and spinal cord being severed at such a high location on the spine. The doctors told me I would never walk again, as well as move my arms well enough in order to wheel a manual wheelchair. They also said I may not be able to ever play guitar or sing again. They didn’t think playing was physically possible but also were almost certain I would have troubles singing due to how much they had to move my vocal cords in ordered to remove bone fragments and install the hardware to support my neck. I have a different vision or some say optimism. I’m going to continue on and never quit believing that I will overcome this obstacle!” – Steve Mireau

“Burning Desire” by David Freemore

“Burning Desire” by David Freemore

Artist Statement

Dave Freemore began his wood burning (pyrography) with a collection of cedar which his father gathered from the Missouri River shores in Montana.  The collection was the result of seeing Dave’s first work, his wife’s parents’ names burned on a piece of white pine displayed over their garage door of their Lake Comfort retirement home.

Dave soon began collecting pictures to fit the wood slabs, primarily cross-cuts.  The coloring, size, and placements of the knots in the wood intrigued him and drove his selection of pictures to burn.  Giving gifts of his art spurred more work.  Sometimes people wished to purchase pieces to fit their own collections.

After several years of hiatus, retirement and a display in his home has brought curiosity from new friends and neighbors.  A recent trip to Costa Rica has peaked Dave’s interest in renewed wood burning after acquiring chunks of laurel while he was there.

“Our family appreciates artwork immensely,” says his wife, Jan, “since we have family generations before and after us that have created a variety of art expressions.”  Dave and Jan live in the Comfort Lake home where the first piece was originally displayed.
